Top 5 Signs You Need to Leave Your Toxic Job
Today we're talking about something serious, but real, and that's how to know when it's time to leave your toxic job.
Now, I'm not saying that every bad day at work means that it's time to pack your bags. We all have that one coworker who likes to microwave fish in the break room and it ruins your day, right? But if you've noticed that your work problems run deeper than smelling reheated seafood throughout the day, it might be time to consider whether your job is actually a good fit for you.
But before you start plotting your Mission Impossible style escape, let's dive into the top five signs that you need to get out.
Sign #1 - Chronic Stress and Burnout
Let's start with the obvious one, chronic stress and burnout. We all have those days where you need five cups of coffee to survive. But if you're finding that every day feels like you're in a bad remake of Groundhog Day, where the stress just keeps repeating and there's no end in sight. That's a real problem. That's not normal. And it's not normal to spend every Sunday night thinking, how can I fake the flu for a week to get out of work?
Now, trust me, I've heard people try everything from, I lost my voice to, I suddenly developed a rare tropical disease just to get out of work, but I want to make you aware that burnout is a real thing and no job is worth losing your sanity over.
Sign #2 - Lack of Growth and Development
Next up, we have lack of growth.
Let me know if this sounds familiar to you. A friend of mine worked at a place where his boss kept saying, we're going to train you next quarter. And that quarter never came. It was just always, we'll get to it next quarter. We'll get to it next quarter. We'll get to it next year. I'm pretty sure there's a parallel universe where my friend is still waiting for that training. But the moral of the story is don't wait for an imaginary next quarter or a next month or next year to get the development that you deserve.
If you've been stuck in the same role, doing the same thing for years with no new opportunities, no skill development and if your biggest accomplishment this year was figuring out how to nap at your desk without getting caught, it's time to rethink things. You should be in a job where you're challenged and you should be in a job where you're not just killing time until the next episode of your favorite podcast drops.
Sign #3 - Lack of Support or Respect
In a healthy workplace, respect is like air. It's everywhere and you don't really think about it until it's missing. But in a toxic job, respect is harder to find than a clean coffee mug in the break room.
If your ideas are constantly being shot down, if your contributions are being overlooked, or even worse, you're treated like that printer that always jams when you need it most, it's a sign that your workplace might not value you as much as you deserve. And trust me, you're worth more than a malfunctioning office appliance.
Sign #4 - Constant Fear of Losing Your Job
Now the next one is a reality for a lot of people and that's fear of losing your job. You know your workplace is toxic when you spend more time thinking about job security than actually doing your job. It's like living in a constant episode of Survivor where you're wondering if you're going to be voted off the island every week. That's not a good environment for you or anybody to be in. If every email from your boss feels like it might be the one telling you to pack your things, that's not normal. No one should have to live in a constant state of job loss anxiety.
If your company's management style involves keeping you on edge, and making you feel pressured to do your work, and overlooking at you, and micromanaging you, and looking over your shoulder, then it's probably time to start finding the door and looking for a new job.
Sign #5 - You've Lost Your Passion for the Work
Last but not least, you've lost your passion for the work. Remember when you first started and you were so excited. You were like, I'm going to change the world one spreadsheet at a time, but now it's more if I have to open one more email, I might scream. If your passion has evaporated faster than your lunch does from the communal fridge, it's a big sign that your job is draining you. Hey, even a job that pays the bills, isn't worth it if it's killing your spirit in the process.
Before we wrap up, let's recap those five signs, chronic stress and burnout, lack of growth, lack of respect, constant fear of being fired, and finally, losing your passion for the work.
Now, while you were watching this episode, if you were nodding along with a yes motion to more than one of these, it might be time to start writing that resignation letter, or at least thinking about it, or at least reaching out to your network and seeing what other opportunities are out there. Just looking on monster. com, just start thinking about what else could be the next step for you because odds are you're in a toxic work environment.
And remember this, life is way too short to spend it in a job that makes you daydream about spontaneous leg injuries that are going to get you out of doing work.
Now before you go planning your dramatic Jerry Maguire style exit, what if the problem isn't the job, but it's your boss?
Maybe you've got one of those bosses that makes Darth Vader look like a team player. If that's the case, I got you covered.
In my next episode, I'm sharing strategies for dealing with a toxic boss, because sometimes it's not about leaving the job, it's about surviving the boss. So trust me, you don't want to miss this video. Thanks for watching.
